Our history
The parish in Veľká Čalomija is mentioned as early as 1070, which probably assumes that there was also a church at the parish. In 1241, the Tatars attacked the settlement around the church. They ransacked everything and set fire to the old church despite staying here for only a few days. Around this church in the southeast stood a settlement, which was named after the church Egyház Chalamija. In this period, impenetrable swamps spread around the Ipeľ river, where there were small islands on which poplars grew. To the north of Ipľ there were meadows where the inhabitants of the settlement grazed horses and cows.
On November 8, 1938, Hungarian soldiers came to the village and Czech soldiers were forced to leave the village. In 1939, World War II broke out. the world war, which deprived many people of their lives. Even in Veľká Čalomija, a sad mood prevailed. The village was liberated by Soviet soldiers who arrived here on December 20, 1944. Earlier, on December 8, 1944, the Germans destroyed the Ipeľ bridge. The fighting for the village lasted until December 20, 1944, when after 11:30 p.m. the village was liberated. After the end of II. World War II, Veľká Čalomija became part of Czechoslovakia again, and the border with Hungary was formed by the river Ipeľ. This war severely affected the development of the village. 3 residents were taken to concentration camps and 15 people died in direct battles with the German fascists.
In the spring of 1945, the bridge was rebuilt and the operation of the local mill was resumed. Immediately after the war, property in the village was confiscated and rented to national associations. These properties were later seized by the state and annexed to the village of Kosihy nad Ipľom.
