Our history    

The Kelmė settlement was formed in the 15th century.

After the end of the war with the Crusaders, when the Zemaites began to absorb new areas of land. The name Kelmė describes a settlement established in a place cleared of trees. The date of establishment of Kelme is considered to be 1484, when the first church was built. From the 15th century Kelmė manor is mentioned. in 1591 Jonas Gruževskis bought the Kelmė manor with the town. The Gruževski family owned this manor for more than 300 years. The ensemble of the Kelmė manor building, which has survived to this day, is regarded as the only one of the provincial manors in the baroque style that has survived in Lithuania. A very distinctive structure of the Kelmė manor ensemble is a two-story tower-like brick gate. They had a threefold purpose. It was a representative entrance to the homestead, the premises of the first floor housed a prison from the time of serfdom, and the second floor housed a library. The Gruževskis took care of education, the consolidation of the Reformation faith in our land, in the 17th century. in the beginning, he built a brick church and founded the first school.

March 23 On the instructions of Julis Gruževskis, a member of the secret rebel committee of Raseiniai County, the county surveyor Karolis Jautokas summoned the landowners, nobles, townspeople of the area to Kelmė Manor and announced the decision of the county committee to start the rebellion. March 25 K. Jautokas and a group of rebels occupied Kelma and, having summoned the townspeople, announced the beginning of the uprising. Julius Gruževskis organized the rebel units, formed a Ulon regiment at his own expense and together with other commanders on March 26. occupied the center of Raseiniai county.


The road from Riga to Tilže was built

Kelmė especially flourished in 1836-1858, when the road from Riga to Tilže was built through the town. 20th century at the beginning, about 4,500 inhabitants lived in Kelme. in 1921 A pro-gymnasium was opened in Kelme, which later became a gymnasium. 1930 a dairy, a linen factory was built. in 1936 Kelmė Šauliai V. Putvinskis Museum was established in 1937. a public state library was established. Kelmė suffered greatly during World War II, when about 80 percent of the town's buildings were destroyed.

The history of Kelmė district is related to the historical development of individual towns in our region, as former centers of spiritual culture.
